Private Debt
Private Debt

What is our strategy?
Our private debt strategy focuses on lending to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and microfinance institutions. We mainly invest through financial institutions in emerging markets. Our aim is to generate social impact by creating jobs and reducing poverty. Blended finance, combining public capital with private investments, is one approach we use.

How can you benefit?
Private debt (including microfinance investing) is a way of offering attractive, highly diversified, and stable returns. Because it is uncorrelated to global capital markets, it should reduce the level of risk in your overall portfolio. Private debt is also known for low volatility – while microfinance in particular can add greater stability due to low default rates.

Why invest with us?
Private debt investments are part of our DNA. As the first commercial manager of microfinance debt investments worldwide, we have built up a 20+-year track record and considerable expertise in frontier and emerging markets.
You will benefit from unique insights and access to investment opportunities provided by our local presence, global network, and long-standing relationships.

Listed Debt
Listed Debt

What is our strategy?
Listed debt is one of the largest asset classes, giving investors access to public markets. It provides a fixed income by purchasing impact and climate bonds in emerging markets.

How can you benefit?
You will follow a liquid and scalable strategy which aims to deliver high positive impact through listed fixed-income investments. In addition, you will be diversifying your portfolio with emerging market debt impact bonds.
It also contributes to our goal of making impact investment open to all, through easy-to-access investment funds (UCITS, Undertakings for Collective Investments in Transferable Securities), available to private and institutional investors.

Why invest with us?
We call on the expertise of two specialist teams. Our portfolio management team applies its experience with investment products across emerging markets, while our dedicated impact management team uses state-of-the-art assessment tools to evaluate the impact of bonds on people and our planet. We keep the two teams separate to reap the benefits of both while avoiding any conflicts of interest.

What is our strategy?
Private equity refers to direct equity investments made in private companies, with the aim of achieving a financial return in tandem with a social and environmental impact.

How can you benefit?
By working closely with our portfolio companies, we support them in improving their governance, operations, and financial efficiency. This in turn creates value and helps to enhance your return on investment. In addition, as private equity is an uncorrelated asset class, you will benefit from the diversification. It also gives you access to various fast-growing consumer segments in emerging markets.

Why invest with us?
Capitalizing on 20+ years of experience, we have built a best-in-class impact platform which (with our network and on-the-ground presence) makes us a market leader. Our in-depth industry expertise in the financial sector means we can tailor our investment strategies to emerging markets. And with our impact framework and reporting tools, we demonstrate best practice for impact and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management.

Technical Assistance & Capacity Building
Technical Assistance & Capacity Building

What is our strategy?
Technical assistance is a pool of grant funds, which have been donated by investors to be used for market intelligence or capacity building in line with the aims of a particular fund.

How can you benefit?
If non-financial services are combined with impact investment, the fund’s investees who benefit from the new support will strengthen their operations and offering, thus improving their risk profile. This means technical assistance creates an enabling investment environment geared towards achieving impact. It also supports local players and contributes to building markets.

Why invest with us?
We have extensive experience in setting up various successful technical assistance facilities, closely linked to our managed funds. We have designed a large number of technical assistance projects across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Plus, as a leading impact investment manager, we have developed long-standing relationships with many impact-oriented financial services providers across the globe.

A story of mutual growth

Banco Solidario and BlueOrchard

One of the microfinance institutions that BlueOrchard has partnered with since its beginning is Banco Solidario S.A. Banco Solidario started as a finance company in 1995, when microfinance was still unique in Ecuador. It was the first microfinance initiative in Latin America that did not begin as an NGO. The founders wanted to demonstrate that microfinance could be profitable and have a social impact without donations. Over the years, Banco Solidario has become one of the strongest brands in Ecuador. For more than 20 years, BlueOrchard has contributed to this positive development. With its loans, BlueOrchard supported the bank in both critical and in booming times, becoming a close witness to the development of a leading microfinance bank.

Strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers

Fact-based decision making with Agritask

Across the agricultural value chain, decision makers require high-quality data. However, available data in emerging markets is limited and difficult to interpret. This negatively affects agricultural productivity, pricing, and availability of agricultural insurance. Agritask, a BlueOrchard partner company, has set out to address this challenge. The company is providing data-driven decision support tools for the management of agribusinesses and agricultural insurers. Combining comprehensive data integration and unmatched flexibility, Agritask’s scalable platform enables smallholder farmers to optimally adapt their activities to local conditions and effectively manage agricultural risks such as weather events and pests on a day-to-day basis.

Affordable renewable energy for Indian commercial and industrial customers

ReNew Power's green bond

India’s energy consumption has tripled in the last three decades. However, in the country’s overall energy mix, polluting energy sources such as coal, oil, and solid biomass remain the main energy sources, making the country one of the largest emitters of CO2 in the world. We invested in ReNew Power’s green bond, which financed thirteen solar and wind projects in India. ReNew Power is a renewable energy independent power producer in India with a mission to provide affordable renewable energy and to improve the country’s carbon footprint. The company has utility-scale wind and solar energy projects as well as distributed solar energy projects that generate energy for commercial and industrial customers.
